We Do Trail Work – Join Us

Our mission is to expand the network of sustainable and enjoyable trails in SLO County and to maintain the trails currently in use. Since 1987 We have worked with California State Parks, National Forest Service, San Luis Obispo City and San Luis Obispo County in designing and building new trails and in maintaining existing ones. Our volunteers do approximately 2,000 hours of trail work – moving dirt – each year. We organize at least one trail workday per month. In addition, there are usually two major workdays each year called TRAILWERKS: all-day events with meals, tee shirts, and raffle prizes for participants.

CCCMB is an International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) affiliate. In addition to trail work we encourage trail etiquette which helps prevent future erosion, reduces user conflicts and ensures trail access. Unlike many other clubs, we focus all our efforts on trail develop and maintenance. Aside from the camaraderie of working and eating together at workdays, we don't organize rides or social events.

Instead, we focus on: recruiting and educating volunteers to do quality trail maintenance; training crew leaders in the sophisticated art of trail design and maintenance; and working cooperatively with public land managers. As a result we are able to maintain all of the commonly used cycling trails in the county including Morning Glory on West Cuesta Ridge, Fernandez Trail in Pozo, trails in the Irish Hills, on San Luis Mountain, at Lopez and Santa Margarita Lakes, and at Montana de Oro and many others. Our crew leaders have lead in the design and construction of essentially all of the new multi-use trails that have been developed in SLO County in the last 15 years including: Barranca and Hazard Peak Trails in MdO; Morning Glory; the Mariposa and King Trails in the Irish Hills; and Lemon Grove on San Luis Mountain. This successful trail maintenance and construction record is a direct result of well-establish, ongoing and cooperative working relationships we have with State Parks, the Forest Service and the City and County of San Luis Obispo.

CCCMB is very fortunate to receive funding for all of its needs (e.g. communications, tools, education, supplies, food) from several generous sources, including the San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club, the San Luis Obispo Open Space and Trails Foundation and most San Luis Obispo bike shops.

The 2008-9 trail work schedule is posted above. For current news about CCCMB’s trails efforts and a membership form see the PDF files available on this webpage. Also listed here is information regarding CCCMB’s monthly meetings.
